Reading at University can sometimes be very heavy-going. There is a great deal of it to get through and it is easy to lose concentration.
Our monthly Reading Workshops address these issues by helping you to set Reading Goals.
Our next Reading Workshop will take place on Wednesday 16th January, 2018, 14:00 - 16:00, in Room 2, First Floor West, Mile End Library.
If you would like to sign up for a workshop, please email firstname.lastname@example.org with:
- Your name
- Your student number
- Your department
- Your year of study
You will need to bring to the workshop some of your reading material (journal articles, books) and a notebook or laptop.
What happens in a Reading Workshop?
When you arrive, we spend 10 minutes helping you set some realistic reading goals within the time you are with us. We can give you some examples to help you. You then get reading for the next 50 minutes. When the time is up, you review what you have achieved with the help of the tutor or a fellow student and we look at any obstacles that you encountered when doing your reading.
In the light of feedback, we have modified the second half of the session, which is now more guided. We now look at strategies for effective reading and answer individual questions during the second half. However, workshop participants do have a choice: if they prefer to reformulate their goals or set another and carry on reading, they are free to do so instead.
Students who have previously attended have reported that our Reading Workshops have had a really positive effect on their concentration.
